Logbook 2027 · Small‑group expeditions from BergenExpeditions from Bergen

Eight people.Two guides.No road in.

We take small groups by sea kayak and on foot into the fjords, the outer islands and the Arctic: water the cruise ships only pass and coast the roads never reach. Six routes, May to September, all led from our boat shed in Bergen.

Log 01 · The 2027 season

Six routes. Fourteen departures. Never more than eight of you.

Every route is graded from 1 to 5. Grade 1 needs no experience at all; grade 5 wants a season of multi-day trips behind you.

Prices are per person and cover guides, boats, dry suits, food and every night's camp.

By kayakOn footPlanned line

Route of the 2027 departures. Camps move with the weather; the line is the plan, not a promise.

Day by day

Five to seven hours on the water a day, with a rest day on the ice.

  1. 1

    Bergen to Balestrand

    8 km paddled2–3 hours

The express boat leaves Bergen at 08:00 and puts you on the Balestrand quay by noon. Boats fitted on the jetty, then a shakedown loop into the Esefjord before camp.

    Sleep: wild camp, Dragsvik

  2. 2

    Into the Fjærlandsfjord

    15 km paddled5 hours

The fjord narrows to a kilometre and the walls go straight up. In June there's a waterfall every few hundred metres; lunch is on a shingle beach you can only reach by water.

    Sleep: wild camp, Mundal shore

  3. 3

To the head of the fjord

    13 km paddled4–5 hours

The water turns milky green with glacier flour as Fjærland comes into view. The afternoon is yours in the village and its honesty-box bookshelves.

    Sleep: campsite with showers, Fjærland

  4. 4

    On foot to the ice

    9 km on foot5 hours

Eirik leads the walk up the outwash plain to the tongue of the glacier. Crampons and harnesses are provided and no glacier experience is needed.

    Sleep: Fjærland, second night

  5. 5

    Back down with the wind

    24 km paddled6–7 hours

The longest day. The afternoon northerly usually pushes us down-fjord, and we hug the west shore for the waterfalls we missed on the way up.

    Sleep: wild camp, Kvamsøy point

  6. 6

    The crossing

16 km paddled4.5 km open water

We cross at first light, when it's flat, over 1,308 metres of fjord. Then into the bay at Vik and up to the stave church before dinner.

    Sleep: meadow camp, Vik

  7. 7

    The south shore

    18 km paddled5–6 hours

Orchards, porpoises and the old ferry quays. Last night under canvas, with Ingeborg's fish soup and the sun going down at 23:10.

    Sleep: wild camp, Fresvik

  8. 8

    Leikanger and home

9 km paddledBack in Bergen 20:00

A last crossing to Leikanger, boats washed and packed by 13:00, and the 15:40 express boat back into Bergen.

Log 05 · The small-group promise

Eight is the most we will ever take.

Eight fits round one fire, in one bay, on one small campsite without crowding the shore. It's also the most two guides can keep an eye on in a rising wind.

  1. Two guides, every time

One leads, one sweeps. On the water it's never more than four of you to each guide.

  2. A spare day in every route

If the wind says no, we wait it out on the beach. We'd rather miss a headland than push a crossing.

  3. Four guests and it runs

Once four places are booked, the departure is guaranteed, and we tell you the same day.

  4. Leave it as we found it

Fires below the tide line, nothing left behind, and 2% of every booking to the local shoreline clean-up crews.
