No. 05Since 1934
Ninety-two years on one corner of Court Street.
- 1934
Angelo Ferrante opens with two chairs, a leather strop and a pole bought secondhand from a shop on Atlantic Avenue. Dockworkers come in Saturday for a shave and a cut before the dance.
A haircut: 25¢ - 1951
The porcelain enamel sign goes up over the door, fired in red, cream and navy at a sign works in Long Island City. It still hangs there. We had it re-fired once, in 1988.
A haircut: $1 - 1977
The July blackout. Vinnie Ferrante finishes three shaves by kerosene lamp while the block plays cards on the stoop. Nobody gets nicked.
A haircut: $4 - 1998
Sal takes chair three under his father. The pole is rewired and turns again after eleven still years.
A haircut: $14 - 2026
Four chairs, Sal in the first one, a waiting bench that seats six and the same pole turning by the door.
